EMERGENCIES AND MEDICAL CARE

In case of emergency, you can phone the general 112 emergency line and ask for an ambulance or the fire service: 081 or Catalan Police Force: 088.

If however, you need medical attention and are not in need of an ambulance, you can visit the 24-hour medical centres of Falset (in the Tancat area of the village. Tel. +34 977 83 12 88) or Cornudella. These are known as "CAP" which stands for "Centre d'Assistència Primària" or first aid really. If the doctors feel you need hospital treatment, they can arrange it from there. Most doctors speak some English even if the receptionist doesn't. Treatment and care is fast and efficient in these centres and you generally do not need to wait very long. Another alternative is to go to Accident and Emergency at either Mora d'Ebre hospital (a small cottage hospital which does not offer services for more serious cases) or Reus hospital (St. Joan) which is much bigger. Waiting times here will of course be a lot longer.

If you are a European Union national, you show your international medical card and all treatment is free as there is a reciprocal agreement between member countries. If, however, you are from outside of Europe, you usualy pay on the spot (a consultation with the doctor at the medical centre will cost around 40 Euros) and then claim back on your health or travel insurance once you return to your own country. Be sure to ask for all the relevant paperwork.
