SMOKING

In 2007, the Spanish government introduced a new smoking law which affected public buildings. It has mainly affected restaurants and bars. If a bar or restaurant is larger than 100m2, owners are obliged to prepare two separate areas for smokers and non-smokers. If the establishment is less than 100m2, then it is up to the owner to decide whether they want all smoking or all non-smoking. Unfortunately, Spain is a country where smoking is common-place and Spanish do not generally like to be told what to do and so very few establishments have opted for non-smoking. This affects children, as according to the new law, children are not allowed in these areas designated for smoking.

Hopefully the Spanish government will go one step further soon and ban smoking in all public places as has been the case in Ireland and Italy.
