CAMINS DEL VI - "WINE TRAILS" or ANCIENT PATHS

Camins ViA great network of paths through the Priorat is being developed by the Priorat Tourist Board. These paths are based on historic ways which once connected one village to another before the roads were built Some of them are based on the "Camins Ral" or "Royal Ways" which stretched throughout the kingdom from one important town to another. These ways were different from others as they belonged to the king and he was responsible for their upkeep. In Catalonia from the 12th century onwards, these routes were regulated by the "Camini et Stratae" ruling. This document stated that all travellers and merchandise using these ways would also be afforded Royal protection. Although these ways were very important, in the Priorat they passed through the mountains and sometimes were quite isolated. As the merchandise was highly valuable, travellers became a target for highwaymen ("bandolers" in Catalan), especially in the 16th and 17h centuries. All "Royal Ways" had to be at least five metres wide. In the Priorat this was sometimes impossible and the royal party would sometimes have to leave their carriages behind (too wide for the track) and travel on horse, using mules to carry their belongings ("a bast").These ways were dotted with inns or way-houses where travellers could rest overnight and many of them had a blacksmith to repair horse-shoes.

Nowadays, these paths are being recovered for our enjoyment. They take you through vineyards and beautiful scenery and some are many centuries old. More information at the Priorat Tourist Office based in Falset: Tel. (0034 for Spain) 977 831023 or email:- oit@priorat.cat
