DENOMINACIÓ D’ORIGEN QUALIFICADA PRIORAT (DOQ PRIORAT)

THE DOCa. PRIORAT IS EXPECTING AN EXCELLENT 2013 HARVEST

The grapes this year are ripening very well.

DOCa. Priorat. Torroja del Priorat. 6th August, 2013.- The Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin Regulatory Board is predicting an excellent grape harvest as long as over the remaining weeks of the summer there are no setbacks which may affect the development of the vines and their grapes. A dry summer and a hot month of August are proving perfect for good ripening in terms of colour, tannins and a good balance between acidity and sugar levels, all leading to very positive conditions which are suggesting a very high quality grape harvest.
In actual fact, this year, 2013 has been a year of sharp contrasts in weather conditions. If the springtime was characterised by plenty of rain, with very cool temperatures over May and June, the summer has been up until now, hot and dry, something quite common in this wine region.

Pests have had little impact so far and there has been little powdery mildew, very little grape vine moth problems and practically no mildew problems in the vineyards. This all means that the grapes this year are extremely healthy.

To date, the vines are well balanced without excessively vigorous shoots or vegetation, yet with sufficient leaf surface area and grape clusters whose berries tend not to be too tightly packed together. These conditions mean that the grapes are in the best possible environment to achieve, as is often the case here in the DOCa. Priorat, exceptional ripeness.
The chairman of the Regulatory Board, Toni Alcover suggests that these ripeness factors and healthy grape status will lead to a high quality grape harvest. According to data and information gathered by the Regulatory Board’s viticulture section, the chairman goes on to explain that “ we are expecting a slightly increased harvest compared to previous years, with production even exceeding 5.5 million kilos of grapes.”

Harvest

The coexistence of different grape varieties in the area and different vineyard heights and thermal influences mean that the grape harvest is always long and spaced out over various weeks. It is expected to start this year around the beginning of September for the short cycle varieties in the early developing zones and will be fully underway by the middle to the end of September in the whole of the DOCa. Priorat area. It should be finishing in the late developing areas and with the long cycle grape varieties well into October and even in some cases into the beginning of November.
As in previous years, the DOCa. Priorat Regulatory Board hires a team of overseers for the harvest season so that checks can be carried out both at the wineries as well as in the vineyards. The aim of this is to increase surveillance of internal rules and regulations compliance of the DOCa. Priorat.
The DOCa. Priorat is the only “Qualified” designation of origin in Catalonia and one of only two such recognised wine appellations, which comply with the processes and production systems which are observed in this winegrowing region,. in the whole of Spain.
